High School Students in NTB Not Graduated because of School Criticism, KPAI Dropped Hands
A high school student in East Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), was not graduated because he was critical of school policies. Regarding this news, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) immediately checked the location.
"KPAI has supervised Sembalun. Meeting with the school, the Education Office, Ministry of Education and Culture," said Deputy Chairperson of the KPAI, Rita Pranawati, when contacted on Friday (05/24/2019).
Non-graduated students named Aldi Irpan, students of SMAN 1 Sembalun. Rita said Aldi was not passed because he was critical of school policies.
Aldi's critical attitude made him not pass. Rita said the school's response to Aldi's attitude was inappropriate.
"The problem is in the school's way of looking at children. Actually, every opinion is important for children. Don't be considered ugly, but it must be considered a discussion, don't be considered an enemy," he said.
Confirmed separately, KPAI commissioner in the field of education, Retno Listyarti, said that she had checked directly into Sembalun. In addition to attending meetings with policy holders, Retno also had time to interview the family of Aldi and his colleagues.
Retno said that Aldi was a student who was a friend of his friends. The critical attitude voiced by Aldi is not solely on personal rights, but rather represents the aspirations of his friends.
"They indeed consider Aldi a leader. So if there is anything, they complain to Aldi. Because those who dare to speak out Aldi," said Retno.
He added, Aldi's critical attitude was not only recently. Retno saw a different response when there was a change of headmaster.
"It's not just with this school principal, with the previous headmaster, Aldi also voicing. Only the previous headmaster was more cooperative so it wasn't like this, so there was a clash," he said.
Retno said, there was no reason not to pass Aldi. Because, academically, the value of Aldi is also good.
Retno explained that Aldi was not passed because of the critical attitude shown in the period January-March 2019. Retno saw Aldi's critical attitude emerged because of the weather conditions in Sembalun.
"AL objections to school policies occur because 30 regulations were made unilaterally by school principals without deliberation and socialization processes, including repatriating students who were late, not wearing jackets in schools, etc.," he said.
"The two policies that were protested by AL et al were not without reason, given the cold air during the rainy season in Sembalun, right at the foot of Mount Rinjani and the road to the school which was damaged and difficult to pass when it was raining," he added.
He said that Aldi's passing was not an indication of silencing the children's participation rights in school. Even though based on Law 35/2014 on Child Protection, children's voices must be heard and children's participation guaranteed by the Act.
